Food Allergy Policy

Please note that due to life-threatening allergies (anaphylaxis) in our student and staff population, nuts and seafood are not permitted in school or on any of our school busses.

Glen Stewart Primary is also a scent free environment.

Our playgrounds (front and back) are also seafood and nut free. We ask that families and individuals visiting the playgrounds during weekends and holidays note the signage indicating that our playgrounds are peanut/nut free at all times of the day/year.

Wow Butter / Sun Butter

The Public Schools Branch has had a number of recent inquiries regarding “peanut butter look-a-like products”, such as Wow Butter or Sun Butter. These products are made from soy and sunflower seeds and do not contain the protein found in peanuts or other nuts, which may trigger an anaphylactic reaction in a child with a life-threatening allergy.

These products are however, almost identical in colour, consistency, smell and taste to peanut butter and other nut butters; making it very difficult for schools to monitor, as it is almost impossible to differentiate these products from peanut or nut butters.

To ensure student safety, we need to manage the risk that these “look-a-like” products may pose to students and staff with a severe allergy to peanuts or tree nuts; these imitation products are not permitted at Glen Stewart Primary School.

Thank-you for your understanding and cooperation.
